SOS Office Manager Extended Edition
Causeway Errors

Proper operation of the Extended Edition requires the existence of physical extended memory on your computer system as well
as designation of a directory for creation of virtual memory files. If either of these conditions is not met, the system will crash
with a report of a "Causeway Error".

Checking for Extended Memory

Exit all programs, including Microsoft Windows, if you use it. From a system prompt, such as C:\>, enter the command:

MEM e

Inspect the resulting display for readings related to extended "XMS" memory. There should be a number indicating the total
XMS memory on the system, another showing the amount in use, and another showing the amount available. Use of the
Extended Edition requires no less than 1.8 megabytes (1,800K) of available (free) XMS. If you are close to this amount, you
may be able to decrease the size of your disk cache in order to liberate some more XMS. Ideally, the amount of available XMS
should be at least 2.8 megabytes (2,800K).

If MEM does not indicate any XMS, then you must reset your system configuration, adding HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE
to your CONFIG.SYS. This is not possible unless your computer is a 386, 486, or larger system (e.g.: Pentium).

If you are using MSDOS 6 or later, you can run the MEMMAKER program to set the appropriate parameters in the
configuration.

Virtual Memory Settings

The Extended Edition can run in less than optimum extended memory situations by using your hard disk as if it were additional
memory. This process involves the creation of "virtual memory" files. These files will be created in your current work directory
(for example, C:\OM) unless your environment includes a TEMP setting that indicates a different directory, such as C:\TEMP.
This setting is usually accomplished by a line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file containing a line in the form:

SET TEMP=C:\TEMP

If such a setting exists, it is absolutely essential that the referenced directory actually exists on your hard disk. If the directory is
not present, then OM will crash with a Causeway error when it tries to create the virtual memory files.

A related problem that can occur even if you do not specify a temp directory is that there is too little hard drive space to create
the virtual memory files. Insufficient disk space can also produce Causeway errors.

Corruption of Program Files

Causeway errors will also appear if the program file itself (OM.EXE) has been damaged. Run CHKDSK or SCANDISK to
check for drive problems. Once both of these utilities are coming up clean (reporting no errors), reload the most recent set of
OM diskettes.
